Choithrams customers lend voice to WFP’s #StopTheWaste global movement

At a youth-led event in Choithrams Al Wasl outlet on 15 October, 12-year old student activist Naisha Rajani took a pledge to end food waste, she was joined by members of her group, the Beacon Club that champions the cause of food waste. The young activists reminded customers that 1 in 9 people go to bed hungry every day, and just by sharing food with others, buying smaller portions and using leftovers creatively, each person can help stop food waste.

The thought-provoking moment was reported by mainstream media, inspiring discussions on food waste, creating widespread awareness and need for immediate action. Naisha became Dubai’s own Greta Thunberg supporting the global campaign.

Choithrams is focused on reducing food waste at it outlets throughout the year, in 2019 the group recycled 41 tonnes of food waste while donating more than 37 tons of food to the UAE Food Bank.

To raise awareness of Stop the Waste global initiative by the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP) Choithrams team member Kirti Malhotra hosted a cooking class at Top Chef Cooking Studio to showcase useful tips and tricks on how to minimize food waste. Simple solutions for food prep, shopping for groceries, cooking, consuming dishes and storing leftovers were all covered. Participants included influencers Alreemsaif, Suzi Nassif, NourAldin Al Yousuf, Anthony Rahayel and top chefs Maya and Toni Shushani.

The cooking class started with a special message by H.E. Reem Almheiri Minister of Food and Water Security, who addressed the participants with a video message.

Choithrams at Expo2020 Dubai

Alongside the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Choithrams ran the third edition of the #StopTheWaste global campaign to sensitise consumers on the problem of food waste and how the reduction of waste can create savings.

As WFP partner, Choithrams hosted an inspirational thought leadership event at one of the most visited sites at Expo2020 Dubai, the Australia pavilion. Attended by food waste activists, chefs, influencers, leaders from the food industry and even children from leading schools of Dubai, the event became a springboard of inspirational thoughts and actions towards reduction of food waste. Expo2020 TV and Dubai One channel were among many the many media outlets streaming the event live, ensuring reach to millions both in the UAE and globally.
